THE KENYAN DEVELOPER’S STACK DECISION FRAMEWORK — A PRACTICAL GUIDE

This is the last article in Block 1. We have covered the main stacks, the comparisons, and how to choose for client work. This article brings it all into one framework you can actually use. Save it. Share it with your course group.

The five factors that determine your stack choice:

Factor 1 — The project type

Primarily content and business logic? PHP/Laravel.

Primarily real-time or event-driven? Node.js.

Primarily data processing and analysis? Python/Django.

Primarily a static marketing site? Plain HTML/CSS or a static site generator.

A complex interactive single-page application? React or Vue on the frontend with an appropriate backend.

Most projects you encounter in Kenya as a freelancer or junior developer fall into the first category. Build PHP/Laravel deeply. The others become relevant as your work expands.

Factor 2 — The hosting infrastructure

Shared hosting only — PHP/MySQL exclusively.

Entry-level VPS at KSh 1,000–3,000 per month — PHP/Laravel runs well, Node.js is possible with configuration.

Cloud VPS or managed cloud — all options are available.

Vercel or Netlify free tier — static sites and Next.js frontend applications.

Factor 3 — The client’s technical capacity

No technical staff — choose a stack you can support long-term or hand over easily to another PHP developer.

Basic IT person on staff — PHP/MySQL gives them the most autonomy.

Developer team on staff — align with their existing knowledge where sensible.

Factor 4 — Your actual competence in that stack

This is the one developers consistently overestimate. Before committing to a stack for a client project, ask yourself honestly: have I built and deployed a complete application in this stack before? If the answer is no, the client project is not the place to learn it. Build a practice project first.

Factor 5 — The timeline

Tight deadline and high stakes — build in what you know deeply.

Long timeline and low urgency — room to try something new, and a real project is excellent practice.

What BCH uses and why:

Backend — PHP with Laravel. Structured, well-documented, excellent for CRUD and business logic, integrates cleanly with M-Pesa and Kenyan payment systems, runs on affordable hosting, large community.

Database — MySQL for most projects. PostgreSQL when data complexity requires it.

Frontend — Tailwind CSS for styling, Alpine.js for lightweight interactivity, Blade for server-rendered templates. React for projects that specifically require a complex SPA frontend.

Deployment — Truehost or DigitalOcean for PHP applications. Vercel for frontend and Next.js projects. GitHub for version control across everything.

The developers in Kenya who are building the most and earning the most are not the ones who know every tool. They are the ones who deliver reliably, communicate clearly, and choose the right tool for each job.

You do not need to master every stack in this series. You need to understand them well enough to choose correctly and communicate about them honestly with clients, employers, and collaborators. Master one stack completely. Build real projects. Then expand based on where your work takes you.

Block 2 begins tomorrow. We are going into payments — M-Pesa Daraja API, STK Push, Paystack, Pesapal, and how to handle webhooks when they fail at 2am before a client deadline.
